“Physical and Humiliating Punishment of children is a violation of children’s right. International Human Rights Law and Child Rights Convention stipulate that children have a right to legal protection from all forms of violence in all settings. Ending Physical and Humiliating Punishment is essential if we are to meet the SDG target 16.2 to end all violence against children by 2030.”- Said Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children, during an interactive event-“Raising Children without Violence is Possible: How Positive Discipline Leads to Change and Benefits Society”.
The event at the United Nations Secretariat in New York was co-hosted by Save the Children, Governments of Sweden and Costa Rica and Swedish Institute. Representatives of Members States, UN, academia and civil society attended, and had vibrant discussions on the importance of accompanying law reform work with awareness raising and parenting programs. It was a rewarding experience to moderate the event.
